The All Weather season is almost over for another year. Currently, Luke Morris, who tasted Group One glory in the Nunthorpe riding Marsha, will be crowned winning most jockey. at Lingfield. Michael Appleby has trained the most winners (thirty-eight), three ahead of nearest challenger Archie Watson. He has a strong partnership with leading owners Goldolphin as they continue their dominance of the flat racing scene. The winning-most horse category has two leaders at the minute with Spare Parts and Captain Lars joint at the top. Spare Parts could win the category if he wins the mile race. Everything could change in the All Weather Horse Of The Year category because if Second Thought wins the mile race, he will the title but only if Master The World doesn’t win the last race of the card- the Easter Classic. It’s going to be interesting!

GALLIPOLI was second last time out at Newcastle over seven furlongs in February. He was just headed in the final furlong to be down a half length at the post. He won over seven at Leicester on turf so the trip won’t be an issue. Eljaddaaf had Silent Echo behind him in sixth over course and distance when completing a double after winning a six furlong handicap at Chelmsford. The latter is a course and distance winner. Wahash likes the All Weather, unlike Squats to a certain extent whose All Weather form figures read 65548, and has won here before. Both wins have come over a mile but has to carry top weight. Similarly, Master Speaker and El Hombre have never won over seven furlongs. The latter was third on his only try over this trip. Master Speaker is unbeaten for new connections and has won over six furlongs twice this year, breaking an almost three-year winning drought. Take The Helm was beaten a length last year in this.

WATERSMEET has been unbeatable so far this year. His three victories this term include one over course and distance. Lots of the runners today have form tying in with this grey son of Dansili. Curbyourenthusiasm has been second, third and ninth behind him and has been quite consistent recently. Funny Kid, from France, was second behind Watersmeet last time out. Mountain Bell beat my selection into third at the back end of 2017. She is 5lbs better off but has never ran on the all weather at Lingfield. The distance shouldn’t faze her. She has to overcome a three month absence and Watersmeet has race fitness on his side. Soldier In Action comes from the same stable as Watersmeet. He has winning form on artificial surfaces. He was with Nicky Henderson and ran over jumps, where he won a two mile juvenile hurdle, for a bit but he is best on the flat. He finished forth to Dal Harrid, who is running in Meydan on Saturday in the Dubai World Cup, last time out. Curbyourenthusiasm was second. Red Verdon has won his past two but the distance is a huge unknown.

32Red All-Weather Fillies’ And Mares’ Championship Conditions Stakes

William Haggas and James Doyle have already had some big Saturday winners at this early point in the season. Addeybb won the Lincoln last week and Headway was fantastic a couple of weeks ago. They have DIAGNOSTIC in this. She has a fifty percent strike rate, winning three of her six starts. She has won twice over seven furlongs at Chelmsford. Summer Icon beat the aforementioned filly in a similar race in January at Wolverhampton and Mick Channon’s mare has been second on two of her three starts since. One of which was behind Zest over a mile. Zest, by Duke Of Marmalade, has won four of her eighteen starts but is yet to get her head in front over seven furlongs. Her pedigree suggests she would benefit from running over further as her sire sired Big Orange. She was behind Soul Silver in a fillies’ handicap in July 2017. She won last time out over a mile at Chelmsford with Pattie and Carolinae The latter won at Kempton over this race’s trip on her penultimate start. That run was sandwiched them between a second between Soul Silver and a fourth behind Zest. She isn’t without a shot. Lucymae was beaten by Carolinae, whilst looking for a four timer. Summer Icon was sixth. She has winning form over seven furlongs. Nivvo is looking for a three timer after breaking her maiden tag at the twelfth attempt.

Kimberella is a great old servant for Richard Fahy. He won this last year. He is a course and distance winner and was beaten only a short head on his penultimate start behind Kachy. He was sixth last time out but could bounce back. He is a good each way shot. KACHY is also a dual course and distance winner on his past two starts and comes into this in nice form. His yard hasn’t had a runner out of the top two since early March. Athletico has been running good races without getting his head in front on all four of his most recent starts. Gifted Master is nine from eighteen starts. He is a course and distance winner and won over it last time out. City Light and Gulliver are both four year olds. City Light seems the pick of the two.

32Red 3yr Old All-Weather Championship Conditions Stakes

ROCK ON BAILEYS has won five of her ten starts and is very exposed for a three year old. She’s won over five furlongs at Lingfield but the distance won’t be a problem. She is looking for a six timer and can carry 5lbs less. Corinthia Knight is also five from ten and won over six furlongs last time out at Chantilly. Highly rated, he could be a nice winner for young trainer Archie Watson. Count Otto and Desert Doctor are both recent course and distance winners. Breathless Times has won two from three starts and was second on the other. The horse he beat on his second start was Grandfather Tom, who has won three times since.

Spare Parts has been the headline maker of this All-Weather season. Phil McEntee’s gelding has run fourteen times in 2018, winning seven. He is joint most successful horse this season with Captain Lars. If he can win this, he will win the title. He won at Lingfield over seven furlongs in January. He has gone up a whopping 36lbs since then. He has never won over a mile and has a lot to find with the others. Second Thought won on this card last year and has subsequently won two Listed races. GORING is unbeaten on his last four starts, all over course and distance, beating Mr Scaramanga in his most recent start. He had Sacred Act behind him and the latter won a contest against just one other horse last time out. Arcanda is looking for a four timer. Four of them came over course and distance for the in-form Tom Dascombe.

This race could be used as a rematch for the Winter Derby. In that race, MR OWEN passed the post ahead under a peach of a ride by Jamie Spencer but the unexposed Invincible Spirit-colt drifted and impeded Master The World, who was given the race. Battle Of Marathon finished third, Petite Jack sixth and Utmost was seventh in the race. The latter has beaten Victory Bond over track and trip. That race has been a good form line in recent years with Convey winning this race and the Winter Derby last year. Star Archer will improve for the run. Battalion has been jumping over the winter and is coming back from a nasty fall last time out.

Race1- Gallipoli

Race2- Watersmeet

Rcae3- Diagnostic

Race4- Kachy

Race5- Rock On Baileys

Race6- Goring

Race7- Mr Owen

  1. A great read, in the opener I think EARLY MORNING has been overlooked somewhat, 2.5 lengths behind Second Thought and Mr Owen in listed races at Wolverhampton and Deauville respectively. The former is 5/4 fav of the Mile later in the day and should be too good given his Group 2 form behind Harry Angel. Wahash has good AW record but the penalty and drop back in trip may be against him. A similar case for Master Speaker with the step up in trip and up 15lbs, however is in in good form. Eljaddaaf also has a good chance.

The Marathon is a very competitive race with it hard to pick apart almost half the field. Red Verdon is probably the right favourite, Doyle on board, his listed win at Kempton in November has been franked by Master the World. Watersmeet has great form coming in to this also, an easy if not casual win LTO and he looks ideal for this. Mountain Bell has previously beaten Watersmeet which makes her a contender still receiving her mares allowance, but has been beaten by Red Verdon over 1m4f. I think FUNNY KID with Maxime Guyon on board is an interesting contender, a neck behind Watersmeet LTO which can be improved and form in fields comprising 8 horses or more reads 213323 in the last 9 months.

In the mares, it’s hard to ignore any runner by William Haggas, the tactical nature of small fields may have got the beating of her, but prior to that she was very progressive. I do not believe there is any scope in the price to be backing her though. Initially Zest was my pick, however I’m not sure she will scope with the drop back in trip despite having some great 1m form notably behind Muffri’ha. I believe SUMMER ICON will go very close, just beaten by Zest over a mile so the drop back has to be in her favour, evidenced by a great 2.25 length second NTO behind Second Thought, if Early Morning can put in a good performance in the opener then it strengthens Summer Icon’s case even more.

On first reflection, Kachy looked the obvious choice for the sprint, as LTO he had Kimberella, Intisaab and Gulliver behind him, however I think GIFTED MASTER may be the one to side with, may not have had a run in 2018 but is officially rated 2lbs higher than Kachy and LTO beat Intisaab by 2 lengths when giving him 3lbs. Kachy only beat Intisaab LTO by half a length of level weights.

The next 3yo contest is very difficult to pick, Corinthia Night a worthy favourite with his AW record. I couldn’t back a 7/4 in this field. I think Roger Charlton is a great trainer and his horse Breathless Times is unexposed however the horse he beat LTO came 3rd NTO in a class 6 at Southwell. I’ve seen somewhere that Hugo Palmer thinks NEVER BACK DOWN is his best chance of the day, I would agree based on him comfortably having the beating of Corinthia Night LTO whilst being hampered multiple times. Rock On Baileys carries the best record into this race being 5/5 but I question the strength of those races. Desert Doctor with Atzeni on board looks good value, and clearly prefers 6 furlongs with form of 1213 over the distance. Count Otto trained by Amanda Perrett also looks the most progressive sort and he has a good each way chance. I think this will be a very competitive race and there are lots of good each way opportunities.

I’ve already touched on Second Thought’s form but again I don’t need to say he has a great chance at 5/4. I believe the most likely horse to beat him is ARCANADA with him beating Mr Owen LTO and Gabrial and Sacred Act in races prior. 9/1 is the each way play for Goring but I’m not sure of his ability to beat Second Thought or Arcanada.

A cracking race to finish and it’s great for racing to have such competitive races all day. I’m thoroughly looking forward to watching. The Winter Derby trial has many runners in this and I can’t see how Victory Bond is favourite given he was beaten by Utmost with Battle of Marathon just a nose behind and the latter is 12/1. It’s hard to Split MR OWEN and Master The World based on their race LTO and it very well may be them two in the frame again. Based on Victory Bond, Utmost is a good each way bet at 8/1.
