Preview of Day One of the Killarney Festival

By Luke

Killarney’s five day festival gets underway with the Seamus Mulvaney Bookmakers Fillies Maiden over a mile and and three furlongs. Peruvian Lily has some good runs to her name. She was twice placed as a two year old in Maidens, one race at Gowran and the other at the Curragh. Her three runs as two year got her a mark of 83. She has since dropped down to 79. She was last seen finishing third at Tipperary behind Killourney with Balefire back in second. Balefire has since came out and won at Leopardstown last Thursday. I think if she sees out the trip she will be have her head in front at the finishing line at 11/2.

Race two is the Irish Stallions Farms EBF Median Auction Race over a mile and three furlongs. This race looks very straight forward with the favourite Pythion looking to have a great opportunity to get his head back infront. If he can run up to the form of his second behind Western Australia he will be winning by a wide margin.

Race three is the Irish Stallions Farms EBF Fillies Handicap over one mile and three furlongs. I like the Denis Hogan trained four year old filly Trevena with Killian Leonard in the saddle. This daughter of Camelot was a dual handicap winner in England for Ed Walker. Her best run on this side of the Irish Sea came when finishing second on her debut for the yard. She was only beaten a short head by Theobald with Ming back in third. If she comes here in good form I think she will run well at 12/1.

Race four is the BoyleSports Handicap Chase over two miles and one furlong. Lakemilan comes into this race after a decent run over hurdles at Bellewstown. This daughter of Milan comes in here with the advantage of the run unlike the favourite All The Answers. Prior to that outing over hurdles she finished second at Listowel over fences. She is four pounds well in compared to her handicap mark over hurdles. I think she will take a lot of stopping with Kevin Brouder in the saddle at 3/1.

Race five is the Killarney Avenue Hotel Handicap Chase over two and a half miles. Island Master comes into this race off the back of a good third at Tramore. That was his first race since September last year and is sure to come on for the run. With Darragh O’Keeffe on board claiming a valuable five pounds I think he will be hard to beat at 10/3.

Race six is the Killarney Park Hotel Handicap Chase over two and a half miles. Smithscorner was an impressive winner last time out when beating Mega Mindy who opposes again today. Mega Mindy has since franked the form when winning at Limerick on Saturday. While Smithscorner races off a higher mark I still think he is good enough to defy it. I think he will go close with Sean Flanagan in the saddle at 2/1.

Race seven is the BetVictor Novice Chase over two miles and six and a half furlongs. Dinons has to give weight away all round but I think he will be good enough to do so. He has won his two starts over fences to date at Wexford and also over course and distance back in May. I think with Davy Russell he will go close at 2/1.
