Two selections for day three of the Galway Races

By Luke Keena (@lukekeena1)

After a very successful day two with Sirjack Thomas winning the Galway Mile at 50/1 yesterday, I have two selections to keep an eye on for day three.

The feature race on the day is the Tote Galway Plate over two mile and six and a half furlongs. The Shunter sets the standard albeit he is inclined to make a few jumping error. The horse I will be siding with is the Gearoid O’Loughlin trained runner, Mitchouka. Mitchouka was a gutsy winner at Leopardstown on his penultimate start and that race has worked out nicely. The runner up, Livelovelaugh made a mockery of the field in the Topham at Aintree and the fourth has also won a big Handicap since. He was last seen finishing third over hurdles at Downpatrick over a trip short of his optimum. He got an eight pound rise for the Leopardstown win. I think he is capable of competing off this higher mark and I think he will go close at 25/1.

The race that follows the Galway Plate is the Tote Biggest Dividends at Tote.ie Handicap Hurdle over two miles and five furlongs. I like the top weight, Guiri trained by Jessica Harrington. He was very impressive last time out at Punchestown when he won with any amount in hand. The handicapper hasn’t missed him and given him ten pounds. He is unexposed over the trip and his flat rating of 100 would suggest there is more to come. I think he will handle the rise in the weights and go close with top conditional Simon Torrens in the saddle.
